CLTW is a consortium of five universities collaborating with
tribal colleges and public school systems in Montana, Colorado and Oregon. The Center brings
the varied expertise of scientists, mathematicians, and educators to address current challenges
in understanding and improving student learning and achievement in science and mathematics
from middle school through college. Work includes fundamental research and related activities
focused on serving high needs populations in urban and rural settings. The Center supports
an interdisciplinary research agenda, a doctoral graduate curriculum, inservice professional
development and pre-service teacher preparation, much of it delivered through distance technology.
Ongoing formative and summative evaluation is critical to the development and success of the Center.
Our goal is to develop and support a new generation of national educational leaders
who will use their knowledge of mathematics, science, and pedagogy to better serve teachers
and students in the high needs schools, especially those isolated from the main stream by
rural or inner city locations.
